What is Gravitational Wave?
A gravitational wave is an imperceptible (yet unbelievably quick) swell in space. Gravitational waves travel at the speed of light (186,000 miles each second). These waves crush and stretch anything in their way as they cruise by.
We've thought about gravitational waves for quite a while. Over 100 years prior, an incredible researcher named Albert Einstein thought of numerous thoughts regarding gravity and space.
Einstein anticipated that some thing unique takes place while bodies—consisting of planets or stars—orbit every other. He believed that this form of motion should motive ripples in area. These ripples might unfold out just like the ripples in a pond while a stone is tossed in. Scientists name those ripples of area gravitational waves.
Gravitational waves are invisible, but they are very fast and travel at the speed of light (300,000 kilometers per second). Gravitational waves compress and stretch everything on their path as they pass by.
What causes gravitational waves ?
When an object moves at a very high speed, it produces the strongest gravitational wave. Some examples of events that can trigger gravitational waves:
> When a star explodes asymmetrically (called a supernova),
>When two large star orbit each other, and
> When two black holes orbit each other. And drain
But the objects that produce gravitational waves are far away, and sometimes these events will only produce small and weak gravitational waves. These waves are very weak when they reach the earth, so it is difficult to see gravitational waves.
How do we know gravitational waves exist?

These first gravitational waves are produced when two black holes collide with each other. The collision occurred 1.3 billion years ago. But the waves did not reach the earth until 2015!

Einstein was right !
The first detection of gravitational waves is a very important event in science. Before that, almost all our understanding of the universe came from the study of light waves. We now have a new way to understand the universe: by studying gravitational waves. Gravitational waves will help us understand our universe. We can also learn more about gravity itself!
Why gravitational wave are important ?
Identifying and analyzing the information carried by gravitational waves allows us to observe the universe in ways that were not possible before, and gives astronomers and other scientists the opportunity to see truly invisible wonders for the first time.
Gravitational waves are longitudinal waves. Light waves are transverse waves, called dipole waves.
